How does Xterm® work?
The Xterm® Termite Baiting System includes both Above Ground and In Ground components that utilise cartridges containing a bait matrix specially designed to maximise termite acceptance.
Xterm® bait cartridges contain the latest insect growth regulator which provides fast eradication of subterranean termite infestations. It is easy to handle and install, works without having to drill and is environmentally friendly.
The bait attracts termites to the bait stations to feed even when there is a plentiful supply of alternative foodstuff in the area. The slow acting insect growth regulator within Xterm® is then taken back to the nest and spread throughout the colony before taking effect. This allows the effect to reach even the Queen and the King. In other words, Xterm® targets to the heart of the colony.

1. Core Principle: Chitin Synthesis Inhibition Xterm bait contains 1% w/w of the active ingredient Bistrifluron. It is classified as an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR).
Inhibition of Exoskeleton Formation: Chitin is a critical component that makes up a termite's exoskeleton (outer skin). Bistrifluron interferes with the chitin synthesis pathways within the termite’s body.
Death due to Molting Failure: Termites must regularly undergo a process called molting to replace their old skin as they grow. When a termite that has ingested Xterm attempts to molt, it is unable to form a new, healthy exoskeleton, leading to molting failure and subsequent death.
Targeting Specific Groups: This ingredient primarily kills larvae, workers, and nymphs, as these are the stages within the colony that must undergo molting.
The Science of "Molting Interruption"
Xterm Bait Cartridges are more than just poison—they are a biological time bomb for the colony.
Consumption: Worker termites are attracted to the highly palatable bait and begin feeding.
Distribution: These workers carry the bait back to the hidden nest, sharing it with the soldiers, larvae, and the Queen.
The Fatal Flaw: The active ingredient, Bistrifluron, prevents termites from forming a new exoskeleton. During their next molting stage, they become trapped in their old skin and die.
Colony Collapse: As the workforce (workers) vanishes, the Queen is starved, leading to the total collapse and extinction of the entire infestation.
2. Social Behavior: Trophallaxis Bistrifluron is a slow-acting toxicant. This characteristic is vital for the following reasons:
Delayed Action: Termites do not become ill or die immediately after ingestion. This provides them with sufficient time to return to the colony.
Colony-wide Sharing: Termites are social insects that share food through a process known as trophallaxis. Foraging workers that have consumed the bait will feed the toxin-laden food to the queen, king, and soldiers, who are unable to feed themselves.
Chain Reaction: The toxicant is spread throughout the entire colony in this manner until all members have been exposed.
